2 Ingredient Humming bird food

Skip the Red Dye: Why Homemade Hummingbird Food is the Better Choice

If you’ve ever wandered down the birding aisle of your local garden store, you’ve probably seen bright red bottles of commercial hummingbird nectar promising to attract more birds. But here’s the truth: you don’t need it. In fact, homemade hummingbird food is not only easy and inexpensive to make — it’s actually safer for the birds.

The red coloring in commercial nectar is completely unnecessary. Hummingbirds are naturally drawn to the color red, which is why most feeders are already designed with red bases or accents. There’s no need to add food coloring to their food. Studies suggest that synthetic dyes (like Red Dye #40) are harmful to these tiny birds, potentially affecting their health over time.

All you need is a simple 3:1 ratio of water to white granulated sugar — no coloring, no additives. That’s it. This mixture closely mimics the natural sucrose content of flower nectar, providing them with the energy they need without any of the questionable ingredients.

So, ditch the store-bought stuff and go natural. Your feathered visitors will thank you — and keep coming back for more.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Part sugar

  • 3 Parts water

Instructions:

  • 1. Add sugar and water into a sauce pan. Simmer until sugar is disolved. Once cooled add to your Humming Bird Feeder and place on your Patio. Consider somewhere where birds are safe to land without threats of being caught by pets.

**(please don’t use a microwave. It causes radiation. I will cover this in another post)
